In Australia and England, the schools participate in something called "book week". Each day of the week the school does something to celebrate reading. For instance, all the kids participate in a coloring contest. The picture has loads of books on it and each kid tries really hard to color in all the books. Puppet shoes are done, read-a-thons, and at the end of the week the children get to dress up as their favourite book character and bring their book for a book parade. The parents are invited to watch and each kid (at our school) got to go up on stage and talk in the microphone to introduce themselves.
This year Mary dressed up as "the littlest princes" from the book, "I want a sister!" Her costume was unusually easy and effective! Good pick Mary!!Here Mary is with some of her classmates.
Mary & Georgie (her best friend, who went as Rapunzel)
Olivia dressed up as Fancy Nancy! From the book Bonjour Butterfly.
When Olivia got up on the stage all the parents started laughing. Olivia thought they were laughing at her so she was really sad when she talked in the microphone. I told her they were laughing because she was so cute! It was true. The following week the principal asked me if Olivia would dress up again for New School Orientation so she could do her book speech in front of all the prospective parents. I was so flattered! Good job Olivia!Olivia and Taylah Brown (Hermine from Harry Potter)
Olivia again!
Here are some kids from Olivia's year 2 class: Aiofe (Bindi), Olivia W (Angelina Ballerina) Georgia (Dorthy), Isabelle (Pippi Longstocking) and Olivia S (Fancy Nancy). For book week the year 2 kids also had to do a diorama. Olivia made a scene from Olivia the Pig saves the circus. We had just gotten back from the USA and the diorama was due the next day. (We were gone for almost 3 weeks so we didn't get any notice) Good thing we hadn't adjusted to the time zone because we pulled on all-nighter to finish that project!
Below is a picture of the girls picking out which new book they will buy and donate to the school's library. Each kid buys a book and every year the school cycles out older books. In addition, if you buy a book you get to be the first kid to check it out over school holidays!
