Day 4...Purnululu (Bungle bungle) national park-

Day 4 was a driving day. Thus far we had only driven a couple hours a day. But today there was only one thing to see for the next 8 hours...and then we would be in BROOME!
This time we stayed in a little cabin at the camp site. We didn't know how the tent camping would go with the kids beforehand so we booked this place prior in case we needed a break after 3 days in a tent. It was great but unnecessary as the tent camping was going well. I woke up early and went for a 30 minute jog around the water before our car ride. Here are the kids up and ready for the drive (no worries, only freshwater crocodiles in the water behind Thomas there)!
The stop off for today was viewing some orange silica and black lichen striped sandstone mounds.  The sign was off the highway so we decided to take a look and then get back on the road.
Two and a half hours later (so a 5 hour detour total...to our 8 hour drive day anyway) through winding dirt roads (yes we were all car sick...except Stan who was pretending he was driving his high school jeep), 5 flooded water holes (that went up to our car...which I was surprised every time that we made it through), and no place to stop for fresh water or petrol...we made it to the "jelly rocks" as my kids called it-

Stan wanted to go see them.

The the ancient lichen (algae) is indicative that this was all underwater at one time. The aborigines regarded this area as sacred so they never climbed on it or touched it, which ultimately has preserved it to this day-

There was a little bird that was walking in front of us (it never flew away) and we followed it down the path for about 10 minutes- it was really novel.

taking a rest- this whole area would have been flooded during the wet season

Olivia found a frog in the last little waterhole during the dry season

 Bungle Bungle
You should know the kidja aboriginal trib has known about these rock formations forever as it is on their land; but the "white" people didn't discover it until 1983... so it's a new addition to the world heritage site.
 Our car... and our kids...

 back on the road-
It should be noted, due to this 5 hour detour that we didn't get to our destination until 1:00am. We were out of petrol and luckily came across a petrol station before getting stranded on the side of the road. Unfortunately for us the petrol station was closed, so we had to camp on the side of the road next to the station. By now Stan was very good at setting up the tent in the dark. In the morning we filled up with petrol, bought some meat pies (a very common aussie food) and drove the last hour to Broome where we threw on our swim suits and cleaned off in the ocean at cable beach.
